Graphic Designers Portfolio
graphic designers help?
I still have another year in school I am going for Visual Communications. I just want to know from people who do graphic design or something related in the advertising field what I should do to start preparing?
I really want to try and get a job asap after I graduate but I know this is going to be difficult. I heard that the most important thing is having an amazing portfolio, but it seems that I am lacking a lot of confidence, I would just like to hear from graphic designers their history or any suggestions I would really appreciate.

I had a mediocre design portfolio coming out of college. I had a lot of confidence in my illustrations but not so much in overall design. I ended up with a lackluster job doing ad design at a newspaper.
Working on deadline constantly forced me to stop thinking and re-thinking design choices, and just to use my intuition. I got really fast at doing standard, decent ads, but once in a while I would get one that just stood out. After a year, nearly every ad I did was standing out, compared to my co-workers. The downside to becoming good and fast at the same time was that it made me look like I wasn’t doing as much work, so it got piled on me a lot more. The upside to that is that I got even more practice at doing what I liked to do.
I had a figure drawing class in college, where the instructor had the model change poses every 2 minutes. It made us work really fast, and not involve the cerebellum so much. I had a painting class where the instructor gave us 30 minutes for a still life, which isn’t much, and the flowers didn’t have much detail in the end. (That painting is still the first one we hang in any new house we move into – always a work unfinished.) Designing ads on deadline for a year or two was just like that. The end result all depends on how much conscience you have as a designer, but also makes you develop the ability to finish and let go, which eventually gives you the confidence to make design decisions and stick with them. It was good experience for me starting out.

Im not sure why people get so het up against green tech. Surley if its cleaner then its better. Why are so many happy to breath in pollution, poison rivers, and thoughtlessly kill wildlife…not to mention starve developing nations. why be dependant on only 1 source of energy technology ie fossilised carbon. If the greenhouse effect is not happening then at least we get cleaner tech, being developed. If it is happening and we do nothing then we are buggered! oh yea we cant tax the sun and wind.
